George E. Nelson, 70, of Bellows Falls, VT. and formerly of Hinsdale and Winchester died on Saturday, December 15, 2018 at the Jack Byrne Center for Palliative and Hospice Care in Lebanon, NH. He passed peacefully with the love of his children at his bedside after a period of declining health.

George was born the son of the late Mary L. (Bradbury) and Donald G. Nelson on April 8, 1948 in Keene. He was educated locally and graduated from Thayer High School class of 1966.

On June 28, 1966 George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. He served as an Aircraft and Engine Mechanic with the 1st. Marine Division in Vietnam. He was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Bronze Star Medal with a “V”, Rifle Marksmanship Medal. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Sgt. E-5 on June 27, 1970.

George was the owner and proprietor of the Nelson Construction Co. in Winchester.

For fun you could find George standing behind a lathe tooling wood for custom pens and bowls. He also built ornate boxes and small furniture. He was very well known as the “Pen Guy” throughout the community. He loved teaching people to turn on the lathe and to talk wood. George would give freely to his community by participating in the American Legion / Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3968 in Winchester.

 

 

Mr. Nelson is survived by his three children; Melanie A. Morse and her husband Steven of Bondville, VT. Melissa J. Nelson and her fiancé, Aaron Hildreth of Winchester and Jeffrey D. Nelson and his wife Danielle of Fitchburg, MA. His siblings; Wayne Nelson and his wife Althea of Winchester, Sue Smith and her husband Wayne of Shelburne, NH, Danny Nelson and his wife Donna of Winchester and Sharee Nelson of Bellows Falls, VT. In addition, he leaves; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Calling hours will be held on Sunday, December 23, 2018 from 1 to 3pm. in the funeral chapel. Burial will take place with Military honors in the Spring, 2019. Flowers will gladly be accepted.
