Virginia (Cupp) James, age 93, of Keene, NH died on June 22, 2020 in Lebanon, NH after a brief illness.

She was born in Laconia, NH on May 20, 1927 to Charles C Cupp and Ann Mabel (Hoehn) Cupp. She graduated from Wellesley (MA) High School in 1945 and from Newton-Wellesley Hospital School of Nursing in 1948. During and after WWII she served in the Cadet Nurse Corps at Massachusetts General Hospital and The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center in New York City where she met her husband of almost 70 years, Richard H James, MD. to Laconia, NH on May 20, 1927.0she?id not have that name when Mom was born…

She was a Cub Scout den mother and Girl Scout leader, also serving as chair of the Girl Scout troops in Cheshire County and was involved in training Scout leaders. Mrs. James was a past President of the Cheshire Medical Society Auxiliary, and she served on the Cheshire Medical Center Board of Directors. She was also a past President of Prospect Place and served on the board of the Woodward Home.

She enjoyed outdoor sports (hiking, golfing, tennis, and downhill skiing beginning in the 1930s), gardening, and bridge. She was a longtime member of the Keene Country Club, The Racquet Club, and the Keene Family YMCA.
She was predeceased by her husband. Survivors include a stepsister Nancy Cupp McAdams of Clearwater, FL; nieces Penny James of Novak NY and Nancy Leonard of Springfield, MA; two sons Bruce R James (wife Anne) of Lebanon, NH and Gary N James of Hampton, VA; two daughters Gail J Hughes (husband Barry) of Ithaca, NY and Holly F James of Sudbury, MA. Her grandchildren are Eric James (wife Jess Clem) of Lebanon, NH, Seth James (wife Sarah) of Petaluma, CA, and Kyle James (wife Becky DiSavino) of Norwich, VT, Tabitha Treacy (husband Sean) of Painted Post, NY, Jacqueline Hughes (partner Mike McCarthy) of Oswego, NY, Trevor James (fiancé Amanda Drummond) of Scottsdale, AZ, and Alexa James of Rumson, NJ. Her great grandchildren are Margrethe, Oliver and Teddy James of Petaluma, CA; Remy and Eli James of Norwich, VT; Warren James of Lebanon, NH; Marlo Treacy of Painted Post, NY; and Maddie McCarthy of Oswego, NY
