Vergalyn “Vergie” M. (Cone) Wood, 92, of Winchester and formerly of Ashuelot died on Sunday, November 15, 2015 at Applewood Care Center in Winchester. She passed peacefully while sleeping after a period of declining health. Vergie was born the daughter of the late Rosalie (Stone) and Raymond Cone on May 21, 1923 in New Salem, Massachusetts. She was educated locally and graduated from Thayer High School class of 1941. On November 8,1941, she exchanged vows with Cornelius “Connie” Wood with close family and friends in attendance. Sadly, Connie passed in February of 2007 after sixty-seven years of marriage.

Vergie worked for ten years as a secretary, performing various duties for the Holstein Association in Brattleboro. Previously, she had worked for Winchester School Lunch Program, Woolworth’s, National Grange Mutual Insurance, Peerless Insurance and Archie D. Jennings Insurance.

She was a member of the United Church of Winchester, and was very active in Ladies Society and Winchester Women’s Club. She enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Time was spent knitting and doing various crochet projects. She loved being a big part of family events which included playing cards and hosting family gatherings. She loved to bake, especially around the holidays. Once she decided to move to elderly housing, she became fast friends with many of the other residents and enjoyed spending time with them.

Vergie is survived by her two daughters; Rosalie A. Whittle and her husband George of Winchester and Constance “Connie” M. Holmes and her husband Ray of Hinsdale. She leaves her granddaughter Amy S. Whittle and great grandson Caleb A. Whittle, both of Swanzey. In addition to cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Vergie is predeceased by her son Gary A. who passed in 1965, son-in-law Edwin Harvey and her brothers, Donald and Raymond.

In keeping with Vergie’s wishes, there will be no calling hours. A service will be held on Tuesday, November 24, 2015 at 11am. in the United Church of Winchester, 97 Main St. Winchester. Burial will follow in the family lot at Evergreen Cemetery on Richmond Rd. Winchester.

Flowers will gladly be accepted.
