Roland B. Barrett, 78, a long-time resident of Swanzey and formerly of Munsonville died on Tuesday, November 7, 2017 at Cheshire Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene. He passed peacefully with the love of family near after a brief period of declining health.
Roland was born the son of the late Fannie (Georginia) and Earl Barrett on March 22, 1939 in Keene. He was educated locally and graduated from Keene High School class of 1957.
He was a patriot. Roland enlisted in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany during the Vietnam War. He completed his enlistment and was honorably discharged on July 17, 1967 at the rank of Sp4 – E4.
On June 22, 1968 he exchanged vows with Carolee A. Grant at the First Congregational Church of Swanzey. They were married with family and friends in attendance. The Barrett’s have been married for forty-nine years.
Roland worked as a computer operator at NGM Insurance Company in Keene. He retired on March 30, 2001 after forty-four years of loyal service.
He enjoyed life. Time was spent going to the first Baptist Church in Keene where he was a member. He liked to go to yard sales looking for a good buy and he could be found bowling for fun. Roland was also community spirited. He was a member of the Nelson Volunteer Fire Department and a fifty year member of the Golden Rod Grange in Swanzey. In his younger years he liked to roller skate with his wife and was a member of 4-H. Mostly, Roland was a family man. He was a wonderful husband, father and in time grandfather.
Mr. Barrett is survived by his wife Carolee A. Barrett of Swanzey. His children; Alanna J. Bellville and her husband Raymond Jr. of Guilford, VT. And Dorothy L. Sanborn and her husband Shaun of Winchester. His grandchildren. Mary Sanborn and Stephanie Woodruff of Winchester. In addition he leaves cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Roland is pre-deceased by his only brother Wilmer Barrett who passed in 2007.
Calling hours will be held on Sunday, November 12, 2017 from 2 to 5pm. in the funeral home. A celebration of life service will occur on Monday, November 13, 2017 at 11am. in the First Baptist Church, 105 Maple Ave. Keene, NH. 03431. Burial will follow in the family lot with military honors at Mountain View Cemetery, Monadnock Highway, Rt. 32. South. Swanzey. Flowers will gladly be accepted.
