Melvin Pint W. Bashaw 89 of Ashuelot died on Thursday, January 23, 2014 at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in White River Junction, VT. He passed peacefully with his family at hand after a period of declining health.

Pint was born the son of the late Ida M. (Pecor) and John H. Bashaw in Charlestown, NH. on October 7, 1924. Later in life, Herbert Knight became his step-father. Pint was educated in the Charlestown schools.

Pint was a patriotic soul. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on October 29, 1947. He served during the Korean War and was the recipient of the Army of Occupation Medal / Japan with 2 bars, Distinctive Unit Emblem, Korean Service Medal with five bronze stars. Pint was Honorably discharged at the rank of Corporal.

On October 1, 1951 he exchanged vows with Toshiko Morita in a simple service in Kobe, Japan. The Bashaws have been married for sixty two years.

Pint had worked for many companies over his life. He was formerly employed by the Woolen Mill in Charlestown, Hinsdale Paper Mill in Hinsdale and Keith Paper Mill in Turners Falls, MA. Eventually he came to work at the Sprague and Carlton Company in Keene as a machine operator. He was with them for over ten years before retiring in 1980.

Pint was of Mormon faith and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Keene. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Pint was a life time member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2571 in White River Junction, VT. and the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed a simple life and was happy being home with his wife Toshiko.

Mr. Bashaw is survived by his wife Toshiko Bashaw of Ashuelot. In addition he is survived by cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. He is pre deceased by his eleven brothers and only sister.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 from 1 to 3pm. with a service to follow at 3pm. all in the funeral home. Burial will take place in the spring with military honors at Pine Crest Cemetery in Charleston, NH. Flowers will gladly be accepted. However, the family would prefer donations be made in memory of Melvin W. Bashaw to: Hospice and Community Services, 312 Marlboro St. Keene, NH. 03431.
