Kenneth F. Smith 93 of Hinsdale died on Tuesday, June 26, 2012 in Townshend, Vermont. He passed peacefully at his camp with the love of his family at hand.
Ken was born the son of Nellie (Green) and Jesse Smith on March 26, 1919 in Watertown, New York. He was educated in Watertown and Winchester leaving after completing the eighth grade as so many of his generation did.
Ken was one of the greatest generations serving his country during World War II. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and was honorably discharged at the rank of Tech-3 after completing his enlistment.
In 1982 he exchanged vows with Elizabeth (Betty) Richards in a simple service with friends and family in attendance. They had been happily married for twelve years before her death in 1994.
Mr. Smith worked for the Winn Plumbing Company in Chesterfield for over twenty years before retiring in 1980. After he retired he took a part time position working for his daughter, Stephanie Schryba at the Townshend Dam Diner. Ken was a local fixture in the diner. He would do whatever it took to get the tasks done for the day. He will be missed by the customers who became his friends over the years.
He could be found watching baseball on television or at the fields. In his younger years he liked to hunt. Ken was an avid card player. He felt very strong ties to the military. He joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post #1034 in Brattleboro and was a past post commander for three terms. For much of the past thirty years he was a seasonal resident at the Bald Mountain Camp Grounds in Townshend, VT. He became very friendly with Abby, the owner and enjoyed spending time there.
Mr. Smith is survived by his children and their spouses; Barbara A. Sullivan and her husband Dan of Hinsdale, Paula S. Miller and her husband Norman of Northfield, MA. Donald K. Smith and his wife Barbara of Guilford, VT. Jennifer M. Hosmer and her husband Mike of Hinsdale and Debra L. Frederick of Manchester. He also leaves his siblings; Mary A. Howe and Martha M. Zuverino both of Hinsdale. His presence will be missed by his seventeen grandchildren, twenty four great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and numerous friends. Kenneth is pre-deceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Betty) Smith. His parents, Jesse and Nellie Smith, Siblings; Ruth Smith, Bernard Smith, Paul Smith and William Smith. He is also pre deceased by his daughter, Helen M. Weatherby who passed in 2011.
A graveside service will be held on Monday, July 2, 2012 at 10am. Ken will be buried in the family lot with full military honors at Evergreen Cemetery, Richmond Rd. Winchester, NH. 03470. At Mr. Smiths request there are no calling hours. Flowers will gladly be accepted. However, the family would prefer donations be made in memory of Kenneth W. Smith to Hospice and Community Services, 390 Marlboro Rd. Keene, NH. 03431.
