John Barnes Sr. 81, of Swanzey and formerly of Merrimack, MA. died on Wednesday, December 21, 2016 at Cheshire Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene. He passed peacefully after a period of declining health.
John was born the son of the late Gertrude (McCluskey) and Raymond Barnes on June 19, 1935 in Lowell, Massachusetts. He grew up in Lowell and attended Lowell schools.
As a young man he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1955. He served his country and was honorably discharged in 1957.
In 1957 he married the love of his life Shirley Spinetti. They were married in a simple service in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Sadly, Shirley passed in 1980 after twenty-three years of marriage.
John worked as a steel fabricator for most of his life. He retired in 2000 after working for many years at the Babcock Davis Company in Arlington, Ma.
Mr. Barnes is survived by his three children; Diana and her late husband John Tobin of Nashua, Phyllis Cymbura and her husband Lawrence of Nashua and John Barnes Jr. and his wife Vickie of Swanzey. His siblings; Mary Lou Hunt and Janet Shanahan, both of Lowell, MA. In addition he leaves seven grandchildren, two great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. John is pre-deceased by his siblings; Virginia Ramsey, Raymond Barnes Jr. Charlie Barnes, Donna Dowrey, Patricia McAnistan and Joan Woods.
In keeping with Johns wishes there are no calling hours. Burial will take place in the spring in the family lot with military honors at St. Patricks Cemetery, Lowell, MA.
