Howard “Whitey” F. Smith Sr. 80, a life long resident of Swanzey died on Friday, November 14, 2014 at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland. He passed peacefully with his family near after a period of declining health.

He was born the son of the late Selina ( Borey) and Robert Smith on September 9, 1934 in Sharon, New Hampshire. Whitey was educated locally and attended schools in Swazney.

On August 10, 1957 he exchanged vows with Ruth J. Wilson. They were married in a simple service and had been together for almost forty one years before she passed on April 22, 1998.

Whitey worked as a Black Smith and Farrier. He also worked doing Horse Dentistry for many years. Later in life he went to work for the W and W Trucking Company in Swanzey as a truck driver before retiring in 2000.

Whitey had many interests in life. He was an avid horseman, going to horse pulls and horse shows. He was a Gymkhana fan and member of the Eastern Draft Horse Association. Whitey was also a member of the Cheshire Fair Association and a Golden Gloves Boxer. Time was spent with his family and especially the grandchildren after retirement.

Mr. Smith is survived by his children and their spouses; Howard “Whitey” Smith Jr. and his wife Catherine of Swanzey, Lou A. Smith and his wife Lisa of Swanzey, Robert J. Smith of Swanzey and Tina LaBarre and her husband John of Swanzey. A sister in-law Beverly Smith of Swanzey. His grandchildren Caitlin Smith, Austin Smith, Hannah LaBarre, Becky Mattson, Chrissy Clement, Jeffrey “Scott” Putnam in addition to 6 great grandchildren, cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Whitey is pre-deceased by his daughters Andrea Conides Smith who passed on January 10, 2014 and Naomi A. Dingman who passed on May 12, 2014.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 18, 2014 from 5 to 8pm. in the funeral chapel. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at 10am. in the family lot at Mountain View Cemetery, Old Homestead Highway, Rt. 32 S. Swanzey, NH. 03446. Flowers will gladly be accepted. However, the family would prefer donations be made in memory of Howard F. Smith Sr. to: Maplewood Employee Association, 201 River Rd. Westmoreland, NH. 03467.
