Hermon (Herm) F. Winter 88 of Winchester, died peacefully on the evening of January 16, 2010 in the comfort of his home with the love and compassion of his family at his side.

Hermon (Herm) F. Winter 88 of Winchester, died peacefully on the evening of January 16, 2010 in the comfort of his home with the love and compassion of his family at his side.

Herm was born the son of Mayolyn E. (Farnum) and Hermon F. Winter in Gill, Massachusetts on March 17, 1921.

On April 8, 1944 he took his vows to then Miss. Louise E. Fontaine at the House of Flowers in Brattleboro, Vermont. They have been happily married for 65 loving and devoted years.

Mr. Winter had worked previously for the American Optical in Keene. He also worked for the Homestead Woolen Mills in West Swanzey. Herm’s passion in life was working as a Patrolman for the Winchester Police Department. Becoming chief wasn’t for Herm. He was happy patrolling the streets being with the people of the town he took an oath to protect. As part of his duties he was for a time the Animal Control Officer. With time and service he was promoted to the rank of Sargent. Sgt. Winter was well respected by his fellow officers and the community. He started in 1958 and retired after 44 years of loyal service in 2002. He will be missed by many in the community. Mr. Winter was also a member of the Vermont Army National Guard attaining the rank of Private First Class. He was honorably discharged.

Hermon was a member of the New Hampshire Police Officers Association. He was a member of the Keene Horseshoe Club. In 1972 he was the New Hampshire Class A Division Horse Shoe Pitcher State Champion. Ten pin bowling was also a time for friendship and fun. Hunting was a big part of his life. He was happiest out in the boat or on the shores with his best friend George Doolittle fishing. This was a time to relax, tell fish stories and be a part of nature. But mostly Herm was a family man. He loved being a father and a role model for his son. As time moved on he became a grandfather, then a great grandfather. Grandpa / Great Bopa would spend time with the kids, playing with them and being involved in family events. He loved his family.

Mr. Winter is survived by his wife Louise E. Winter of Winchester. A son Richard H. Winter and his wife Susan of Winchester. His two grand daughters; Stacy L. Corliss and her husband Donald and Kari L. Caldwell and her husband Brian. He also leaves three great grand children; Geoffrey Corliss, Lindsey Caldwell and Aaron Caldwell. His siblings will miss his presence; Harold G. Winter of Dummerston, VT. Ruth N. Perkins of Brattleboro, VT. Mayolyn L. Arsnault of Vernon, VT. He is pre deceased by his siblings; Roswell, Cleon and Robert Winter. a step sister, Bernice N. Moffett and a step brother Carroll A. Foley. He also leaves nieces, nephews, extended family and numerous friends.

Spring burial services will take place on Saturday at 10a.m. in Evergreen Cemetery, Richmond Rd. Winchester with full military honors. Monetary donations should be made in memory of Hermon F. Winter to Hospice and Community Services, P.O. Box 564, Keene, NH. 03431.
