Helene (Popover) Kaufman, 93, of Keene and formerly of Woodmere, Long Island, New York died on Monday, September 11, 2017 at Maplewood Nursing Home in Westmoreland. She passed peacefully while sleeping after a period of declining health.

She was born the daughter of the late Yetta (Penner) and Morris Popover on March 28, 1924 in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was educated in Brooklyn and graduated from Erasmus Hall H.S. class of 1942. She then attended Hunter College in New York City for a year.

On June 28th, 1944 she exchanged vows with Edwin Kaufman at Menorah Temple in Brooklyn with family and friends in attendance. Sadly, Edwin passed on January 2, 2008 after almost sixty-four years of marriage.

Helene had worked at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn for twelve years as an administrative assistant.

She was a member of the Congregation Ahavis Achim in Keene for several years. While living in Brooklyn she and Edwin were active members of Temple Beth El where she served on many committees, boards and social clubs over a 30 year period. She loved reading, mahjong, politics, the New York Yankees and cooking. Her children, grandchildren and recent great – granddaughter brought her tremendous joy.

Mrs. Kaufman is survived by her children Jerrold M. Kaufman and his wife Deborah of Spofford, N.H.; daughter Carol Kaufman of Kalispell, Montana; two grandchildren, Isaac Kaufman and his wife Kimberly of Hinsdale and Eleanor Kaufman of New York City, N.Y.; and a great granddaughter, Maisie Jones Kaufman of Hinsdale. She is also survived by her sister Rhoda Turk and husband Saul of Brooklyn; her sister Miriam Parks of Woodmere New York; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Helene is pre-deceased by her sister, Ruth Harris and brother in-laws Lawrence Parks and Harold Harris.

A funeral will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 10am. at Congregation Ahavis Achim 84 Hastings Ave. Keene, NH. 03431. Burial will follow at Monadnock View Cemetery, Park Ave. Keene, NH. 03431. Donations in her memory can be sent to Congregation Ahavis Achim.
