Harriet A. Babcock

Harriet A. Babcock 77 of Keene died peacefully while sleeping on Thursday, March 28, 2013. She passed after a long period of declining health from emphysema.

Harriet was born the daughter of the late Winifred (Nicholson) and Robert F. Babcock on June 18, 1935 in Cambridge, MA. She was educated in Massachusetts and graduated from Northfield Mt. Hermon class of 1953. After high school she continued with her education graduating from Brown University with a Bachelors Degree. As time went on in life she continued her education taking classes at Keene State College.

Miss Babcock started her career with Congressman Jim Cleveland. She worked as an aid and she loved living and working in Washington D.C. After the congressman left office she returned to Keene accepting a position at Franklin High School as a teacher. She worked in this role for many years before retiring in 1970.

Harriet never married. She was happy being a single woman this gave her time to participate in various charities and hobbies. Harriet enjoyed working in her flower gardens and was an avid golfer. She played on local tours and was the womans champion at the Keene Country Club in 1986, 87 and 88. She was always up for a game of bridge. Much of her time was spent with various organizations and boards. She was a member of the Old Homestead Garden Club. She volunteered for the local Visiting Nurses Association, the Cheshire County Historical Society and Meals on Wheels. Time was freely given as a member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers and Sisters. Harriet was the past President for the Cheshire County Womens Republicans and she was also a member of the N.H. Womens Republicans. She had a soft spot for animals and this brought her to hold a seat on the Board Directors for the Monadnock Humane Society.

Miss. Babcock is survived by her only sibling, Mildred B. Wolfe of Keene. She is also survived by cousins, extended family and numerous friends.

At Harriets request burial will be held privately with Christian burial rights in the family lot next to her parents. A celebration of life service will occur on Monday, April 1, 2013 at 2pm. in the Cheshire Family Funeral Chapel. Flowers will gladly be accepted. However, the family would prefer donations be made in memory of Harriet A. Babcock to the Monadnock Humane Society, 101 West Swanzey Rd. Swanzey, N. 03446.
