Gertrude (Grimshaw) Murphy died on Sunday, November 13, 2016 at Springfield Hospital in Vermont. She passed peacefully in her sleep nine days before her 94th birthday. Family and wonderful staff at Springfield Hospital Vermont had surrounded her with love and care during her final days. Her passing came quickly and gently, as was her wish.
Gert was preceded in death by her parents George and Emma Grimshaw, brother George Grimshaw and husband, Samuel H. Murphy. She is survived by three children, Clay Murphy (Seattle, WA), David Murphy (Woodstock, VT) and Nancy Kilrain (Feeding Hills, MA). She was also blessed to have four grandchildren, Colleen Murphy (Seattle, WA), Michael Murphy (Burlington, VT), Brendan Kilrain (Feeding Hills, MA) and Katie Kilrain-Hayes (Troy, NY). The greatest joys of her life were great grandchildren Aubrey Kilrain-Hayes and Natalie Kilrain.
As a young woman, Gert enjoyed bowling, water and snow skiing, and summers at Lake George. All of her life, she loved art.from painting to quilting and cross-stitch. But she most loved her children, her grandchildren, her great grandchildren, her church, her stuffed bear collection, her chocolate (and her scotch). She never made a sammie without butter (LOTS of butter) on both pieces of bread. Her home always had fresh baked chocolate chip cookies (with extra butter) in the cookie jar. She was greatly loved and will be missed.
