Frances V. Sherley

Frances V. Sherley, 90, a long time resident of Hanover, NH. and formerly of Albany, New York, died on Monday, October 5, 2015 at Westwood Care Center in Keene, NH. where she had resided the past four months.

Frances was born in Albany, N.Y. on March 8, 1925 the daughter of the late Orien (Howard) and Francis Schermerhorn. She was a graduate of Glens Falls High School class of 1942. She went on to receive her Batchelors of Science from Skidmore College in 1946, and her Masters Degree from Columbia Teachers College.

She had met her husband to be, Warren E. Sherley while figure skating at Madison Square Garden. On September 4, 1954, they exchanged vows with in Glens Falls, NY. Fran was Warren’s care taker for the last few years of his life. Sadly, Warren passed on December 23, 2006 after 52 years of marriage.

Before getting married, Fran was a faculty member for Columbia University in the Nursing Department.

While in Albany, she volunteered extensively for the YWCA. She also did volunteer work for the Albany Academy and the Albany Institute of History and Art. When she came to Hanover in the 1980’s, she was a member of the Hanover Garden Club, the Hopkins Center and Hood Museum, and the International Women’s Club. Fran was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Hanover. She was a figure skater and later became an avid tennis player and umpire. She loved to garden.

Mrs. Sherley is survived by her son, David Sherley and his wife Megumi of Chicago, Illinois. Her sister, Jean S. Watson of Keene, NH. Her grandson, Zachary Sherley of Pittsburgh, PA. in addition to cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her brother in-law, Hugh Watson who died in 2001.

In keeping with Fran’s wishes there are no calling hours. Burial will take place on Saturday, October 24, 2015 at 11am. in the Pine Knolls Cemetery, South Main St. Lebanon, NH. 03755. A celebration of life service will be held on Sunday, October 25, 2015 at 10:30am. in the Our Savior Lutheran Church, 5 Summer St. #1, Hanover, NH. 03755.
