Dorothy Nanny K. Stilwell

Dorothy Nanny K. Stilwell, 97, of Richmond, and formerly of Geneva, Elmira Heights and Greenlawn, New York, passed peacefully with her family at her side on November 18, 2012 at Cheshire Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene after a brief period of declining health.

Dorothy was born the daughter of Mae Hamilton (Vandenburg) and Julius Baldwin Weller on January 15, 1915 in New York City, New York. She was educated in Floral Park, N.Y. and graduated from Sewanhaka High School in 1933.

On October 8, 1934 she exchanged vows with Arnold C. Stilwell Sr. in New Hyde Park, N.Y. She was married to, supported and cared for her husband for fifty four years before he passed on October 5, 1988. In her younger years she worked at AT&T in NYC and later years as a part-time assistant in the Elmira Heights library.

Dorothy was a devout member of the Lutheran Church and remained steadfast in her faith throughout her life. She loved the fellowship of the church and what it promoted. She was a Sunday school teacher, Shepherd and a member of the Care Ministry. When moving to NH at age 90 she joined and grew to love Trinity Lutheran Church in Keene. She liked bible study and partaking in the prayer circle. When leisure time came, she could be found reading or spending time with her family and pets. Dorothy was known for her patient, kind and caring ways. She touched the lives of many people throughout the years and was an inspiration to all.

Dorothy K. Stilwell is survived by her daughter and son ‘n law Sally and Joseph Paul of Richmond, NH. She is also survived by her daughter ‘n law Valerie Stilwell and four wonderful grandchildren; David (Kay) Stilwell, Diane (Ira) Stilwell, Douglas (Anthony) Stilwell, and Debra Stilwell. “Nanny” especially loved her great grandchildren Amanda Stilwell and Brad Stilwell. She also adored her nieces Marge (Joe) Dritto, Kathie Houper, Eileen (Bob) Tellefsen and Dossie (Garrett) Walzack and her nephew Jim (Beth) Rielly. She was Aunt Dottie to many grand & great – grand nieces and nephews. She also enjoyed visits from her step – grandson Aaron Paul & kept in touch with many extended family & friends. Nanny is pre-deceased by her husband Arnold C. Stilwell Sr., her parents Julius and Mae Weller, her son Arnold C. Stilwell Jr., her brother George Hamilton Weller, her sister Margaret Rielly and recently her nephew ‘n law Sheriff Charles Houper.

Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, November 27, 2012 from 2 to 4pm. with a celebration of life service to follow at 4pm. at the Cheshire Family Chapel at 46 South Winchester St. in West Swanzey, NH. Burial will take place on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 2pm in the family lot at Maple Grove Cemetery in Horseheads, N.Y. Flowers will gladly be accepted. However, the family would prefer donations be made in memory of Dorothy K. Stilwell to Trinity Lutheran Church or School, 100 Maple Ave, Keene, NH. 03431.
