Allen J. Sweeney 86 of Keene died on February 7, 2010 at Keene Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene after a period of failing health.
Allen J. Sweeney 86 of Keene died on February 6, 2010 at Keene Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Keene after a period of failing health.
Allen was born the son of Jessie (French) and Herbert Sweeney in Keene on March 30, 1923. He was educated locally and graduated from Keene High School class of 1942.
Mr. Sweeney took his vows to Miss Vivian N. Chase in Keene, 1946. It was a simple service for family and close friends. They have been married for 64 years.
He was gainfully employed by the New Hampshire Ball Bearing Company in Peterborough. He worked as a supervising machinist for the tool making division. Allen retired in 1989 after 32 loyal years of service.
The Sweeney’s moved to Keene in 2003 after Allen retired. Prior to that they lived in Peterborough for 44 years.
Mr. Sweeney was a member of the Peterborough Sportsman’s Club. He also enjoyed bowling, fishing and boating. He was an avid target shooter and enjoyed volunteer work. He would give freely of his time to the Crotchet Mountain rehabilitation Center and the Cedercrest Children’s Home. He enjoyed being with family and his children. He was a wonderful husband.
He is survived by his wife; Vivian N. Sweeney of Keene. He also leaves two children; Angelina Jude Drapaeu of Lodi, CA. and James A. Sweeney and his wife Kathleen of Aniak, Alaska. Grandpa will be missed by his grand children; Matthew Sweeney of Fairbanks, Alaska and Racheal Sweeney of Lomalinda, CA. His one great grandchild; Kyle Halles of Lomalinda, CA. Allen is also survived by two siblings; Robert Sweeney of Albuquerque, NM. and Bernard Sweeney of Shirley, MA. His brother Norman Sweeney died earlier. His nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends will miss his presence.
A period of calling for friends and family will be held on February 10, 2010 from 6 to 8p.m. in the funeral home. A funeral mass will be held at St. Margaret Mary Church, 33 Arch St. Keene on February 11, 2010 at 10a.m. Burial will take place in the spring in Surry. Donations may be made in memory of Allen J. Sweeney to the American Stroke Association, 7272 Greenville Ave., Dallas TX.
